Game of Nodes — Who Will Win the Digital Throne?

The best thing about us humans is that, time and again, we come up with great ideas and new forms of technology that have the potential to change the world for the better. Yes, we go wrong at times and destroy things, wipe out entire nations… but let’s not get into that right now. The curtains on blockchain technology were raised back in 2008 in response to the global financial crisis caused by the central banks and government of the United States. It’s a fact — absolute power corrupts absolutely.…

10,000 Nodes Are Running BTC Lightning Network in New All-Time High

The number of Bitcoin (BTC) Lightning Network (LN) nodes has reached 10,000 for the first time, according to real-time LN statistics site 1ML. According to 1ML, the number of nodes on the LN has grown by 3.17% over the past 30 days to reach a record high of 10,003 network nodes at press time. At the same time, the number of nodes with active channels is 5,975 out of total of 36,246 channels at press time, with just a 0.34% growth over the past month.  The LN is a second-layer…

New Parity Update Fixes a Vulnerability Present in Some ETH Nodes

Blockchain software development firm Parity released an update for its Ethereum (ETH) node software which fixes a vulnerability present in some instances. Remote node crashing vulnerability In a blog post published on Aug. 29, Parity announced the release of an update for its Ethereum node software fixing the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) vulnerability. Per the announcement, nodes running Parity’s software with manually enabled public-facing RPC could be remotely crashed with a specially constructed RPC call. The team suspects that nodes with manually enabled tracing may also be vulnerable to the…

Bitcoin Dev Reveals Multisig UI Teaser for Hardware Wallets, Full Nodes

The organizer of a Bitcoin (BTC) programming boot camp has published a proof-of-concept for a user interface (UI) for multisignature (multisig) protection for both hardware wallets and full nodes. Justin Moon published a quick guide to using the prototype UI on Twitter on Aug. 28, together with the full software code on GitHub.  Lowering entry barriers for Bitcoin Wallets that are protected by multisig technology require more than one private key to access the wallet and are thus thought to be much less vulnerable to security breaches, given that no…

Bitcoin Lightning Nodes Claimed 2.22 BTC in ‘Justice’ Against Thieves: BitMEX

Bitcoin (BTC) Lightning Network nodes have claimed 2.2 BTC in “justice transactions” to deter potential thieves, a BitMex Research analysis revealed on July 15. A so-dubbed “justice transaction” is a punitive mechanism involving the closure of a lightning channel that is suspected to be attempting theft. As the report outlines: “… by design, when a thief attempts to steal funds on the lightning network, if caught, they do not only lose the money they tried to steal, they lose all the funds in the relevant channel. This “punishment” is expected…

BitMEX CEO Says Facebook Libra Will Make Banks ‘Dumb Nodes’

Facebook’s Libra payment protocol could make central and commercial banks irrelevant, but PayPal has no future anyway, the CEO of derivatives giant BitMEX thinks. Arthur Hayes made the comments in a new interview with Taiwanese news network BlockTempo TV on July 9. Speaking during this year’s Asia Blockchain Summit (ABS), Hayes made grim forecasts for both banks and fiat-based payment networks.  Libra, which saw its whitepaper release last month but has yet to launch, has drawn both praise and criticism from across the international economy.  For Hayes, participants who should…

Inflation Bug Still a Danger to More Than Half of All Bitcoin Full Nodes

Figures published by bitcoin core developer Luke Dashjr show that more than half of the full nodes in the bitcoin network are still running client software vulnerable to the inflation bug discovered in September 2018. This revelation poses some danger to the network, as software vulnerabilities are a clear and present danger to the fidelity of bitcoin (BTC). Now that the top-ranked cryptocurrency is in the midst of a positive price run, it is perhaps important that steps are taken to eradicate the inflation bug problem for good. Most bitcoin…

Just 2/3 of ETH Nodes Running Parity Have Been Patched Against Critical Security Flaw

Global hacking research collective SRLabs claims that only two thirds of the Ethereum client software that runs on Ethereum nodes has been patched against a critical security flaw discovered earlier this year. The news was reported by business tech website ZDNet on May 17. An SRLabs report ostensibly shared with ZDNet has reportedly revealed that the critical flaw is a denial of service (DoS) vulnerability in the Ethereum Parity client. As SRLabs has outlined, the flaw could enable a hacker to remotely crash legitimate Parity Ethereum nodes by sending malformed…

Parity Technologies Fixes Node Vulnerability, Urges All Ethereum Nodes to Update

Ethereum blockchain infrastructure developer Parity Technologies experienced a security compromise that required nodes to perform an urgent update, the company stated in a blog post on Feb. 3. Parity, which is a popular technology stack for Ethereum users, said it had received notification of a loophole which would allow an attacker to shut down nodes running its client. “On February 3rd, we received several reports that an attacker can send a specially-crafted RPC request to a public Parity Ethereum node (any version pre 2.2.9-stable and pre 2.3.2-beta) and that node…
